About three years ago when my husband Chris and I were experimenting with various cleanses, we finally stumbled upon one that made sense and really worked for us. After eliminating gluten, alongside some other common culprits, we both discovered just how crap eating gluten made us feel – in completely different ways - bar one, we both felt shattered. Chris got post nasal drip and his eczema flared up. For me it was a pseudo pregnant tummy as well as serious brain fog and mood swings.
The difference was so pronounced that neither of us needed any further proof and since then, by and large, we both avoid gluten – and feel much better for it.
Inevitably, though, there are days when you stray. Not so much because you want to but because you simply forget. I was in the thick of half term holiday last week, a day out in town with the kids, Zeph (6 years) not listening to a word I’m saying and giving me several heart-in-the-mouth moments, leaving me thinking that harnesses for kids ARE a good idea!!! In these chaotic and stressful moments, sometimes you forget. So when we stopped off at Honest Burger, I forgot to ask for a gluten free bun, which I normally do.
Boy did I pay for that mistake. As the afternoon wore on, I started to get one of those thumping headaches that start as a niggle and then turn into a pulsing throb. My energy was completely zapped, I literally could have gone to sleep anywhere. My mood was appalling, snapping at the kids, NO sense of humour and serious brain fog.
Luckily I had my doTerra key ring with me, that I carry around with me everywhere. It’s got 8 mini sample-sized vials that I’ve decanted my most used oils into, so I have them wherever I go. I pulled out Frankincense and put a drop on my thumb and rubbed that onto the roof of my mouth. Then I mixed 1 drop each of peppermint and lavender and rubbed them on my temples. This combination really helps take the throb out of a headache or migraine and reduces it radically.
However, with any symptoms, I always like to look for the root cause and put on my health detective hat. Why was I getting the headache, tiredness, brain fog and mood swings in the first place?
The answer, in this case, was gluten. I knew it and kicked myself. You see 3 or 4 years ago I used to feel like this pretty much all the time. It was a state that I’d got used to. It was almost normal to me. Now I know how good I CAN feel, there’s no compromises for me anymore because feeling good becomes really addictive.
Having a gluten sensitivity isn’t a fad, or something imagined. It’s very, very real and tonnes of people have it, without even knowing.
I’ve experienced this first hand too, from the cleanses I’ve run as well as conversations I’ve had with many people about gluten. I’ve heard from someone who suffered from arthritic, painful joints and when she gave up gluten all the pain was gone. Literally within weeks. Someone else was losing too much weight and had terrible, painful gut and diarrhoea. Within a couple of weeks of stopping gluten all these symptoms started to disappear and when I saw him 6 weeks later he said he was feeling better than he’d felt in a long time. Another person discovered that their skin rashes and itchiness went when they did a cleanse and came back as soon as they started eating gluten again.
If you’re wanting to get to the root cause of why you don’t feel your best, then starting with food is the first place. Working out what foods are right for your body is key because what works for one person, won’t necessarily work for the next. Eating something that’s deemed healthy might not be healthy for your body. Also, eating something that you’re intolerant or sensitive too can make you feel awful, in so many different ways, just take a look below.
If you’re tired of feeling fat, sick and tired, or any combination of the symptoms in the graphic above, and you’re interested in understanding your body better, pressing the reset button and finding out which foods are right for you and which aren’t, then take the next step and book your free discovery session with me by clicking here.
